Problem with registering myself at the police station!
Problem with registering myself at the police station!
Hey, am a student living in Espoo, just moved here a week ago. I am from a EU country and so i went to the police station to register myself over there. I had read everywhere that since i am from EU i don't have any special requirements for doing that. But when i was there, the lady told me that i need to get myself a student health insurance before they can register me. How's that possible? Health insurance is required for only students who come here from a NON-EU country? Has anybody had the same situation or knows someone who has the same problem?
What should i do?
Thanks in advance for answering!

I thought the European health insurance card from your home country should have been enough (together some documents about income or savings) - did you have that with you?

Hi,
Seems that the lady is confused, get the EU KELA card, as already adviced.
If not, ask someone else to serve you.
If you haven't regisrated to maistraatti yet, do that first. Normally after doing this, police that prints out your details, and gives you the print out that you are registrated:)

Well the EU health insurance card is only valid for a while after moving to Finland from the other country, so bringing that along does not in any way prove that the student has an insurance for the whole period of studying.

You need to have the EU- whateverlongnumber - paper for health insurance that you get from your home country, or the blue card but thats for temporary stays.

They did not ask me for anything of that sort. In fact, they did not ask me anything at all. Just showed them my passport and the paper from school, that was it. Left me kinda confused, cus Ive heard everywhere that they ask for a proof of funding etc etc

I found the following link, which might be useful:
http://www.tkk.fi/en/studies/practical_ ... alth_care/
Under "Students from EU/EEA-countries" it says:
"Residents of an EU/EEA-country are entitled to medical care while staying temporarily in another EU/EEA-country. The European Health Insurance Card now serves as a proof of such entitlement. The card entitles you to the same benefits in case of emergency as the local population. You should get the card at the local health institution in your home country before coming to Finland."
Also, information on moving to Finland from the KELA site:

Re: Problem with registering myself at the police station!
Thank you all for ur answers. I went to the police station once again to fight for my rights and it turned out that the lady over there was just messing with me. All that EU students need is this blue EU health insurance card that you can get from your own country. This time they finally registered me, so everything worked out for me.
So it's a lesson for everybody. Know your rights before going in there and be ready to fight for them!

I hope there is a lesson for people to know when to fight and when to bend. Usually it is the citizen that suffers, not the system.Suerte wrote:So it's a lesson for everybody. Know your rights before going in there and be ready to fight for them!

Cats have much to teach us about being foreigners in Finland. Especially in the persistence department.Suerte wrote:Thank you all for ur answers. As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
